Not Gigi. Not Glamma. Just Grammy.

Not Gigi. Not Glamma. Just Grammy.

In a world where names and titles are constantly evolving, why do I choose to be called “Grammy”?

This question often comes my way, especially as trendy and modern alternatives become more popular. Yet, “Grammy” holds a special place in my heart rich with meaning, deeply rooted in principles, values, and a profound connection to legacy.

The Meaning Behind “Grammy”

“Grammy” is more than a name. It is a reflection of respect, character, wisdom, and humility. Like the timeless titles “Mother,” “Father,” “Mama,” and “Daddy,” it carries the warmth of family and honors the unique role of a grandparent within that structure.

Proverbs 22:6 speaks to the importance of legacy and guidance: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

This reflects my commitment to instilling values of self respect and esteem for the elderly ... honor that carry through generations.

Choosing Uniqueness Over Conformity

Choosing “Grammy” is also a choice to remain grounded in conviction and tradition rather than cultural trends. In a world driven by the pressure to fit in, I find strength in standing firm in what has meaning and substance.

Romans 12:2 reminds us: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…”

This verse reflects my belief in living by conviction rather than conformity. “Grammy” is not shaped by trends. It is shaped by truth, tradition, and intentional living.

A Note on Modern Trends

When I first became a grandmother, did I look like what many people imagine a grandmother should look like? Did I dress like a stereotypical granny?

No. I didn't then, and I don't nearly eighteen years later.

Names such as “Glamma” and “Gigi” are very nice and modern. They have become popular in today's culture. I respect that every family has the freedom to choose what resonates with them. But I am drawn instead to what is grounded, timeless, and rooted in legacy.

“Grammy” reflects substance over style and identity over fashion. This is my personal perspective, not a rule or standard for others.  It is simply what resonates with me.

There is no single way a Grammy is supposed to look. Some have gray hair. Some do not. Some dress traditionally, while others embrace a more modern style. What matters most is not appearance, but the love, guidance, and presence we bring to our families.

Setting a Benchmark for the Future

When my grands call me “Grammy,” they are not just addressing me. They are recognizing and honoring who I am blessed to be in their lives.  In choosing this name, I am also setting a standard for them to understand the importance of identity, heritage, and honoring where they come from.

One day, when they have families of their own, I want them to understand the value of choosing what reflects meaning and purpose in their own lives. “Grammy” becomes a symbol of the principles they can carry forward into their future families.

Anchoring in Tradition

This is a deliberate choice to honor the past while guiding the future. “Grammy” anchors us in values that do not shift with culture or trends. It is a reminder that true worth is found not in imitation, but in authenticity and conviction.

When my grands call me “Grammy,” they are embracing more than a name. They are embracing a heritage of respect, integrity, and timeless values. It is a living reminder that some things are worth preserving.

Conclusion and Legacy

In everything I do, this is my truth. I do not care to be like everyone else.

“Grammy” gives me a space where I can reflect the WORD and not conform to the WORLD that often lacks the love embodied in the WORD.

By choosing “Grammy,” I honor the divine love and guidance I believe in and hope to pass that legacy forward, guiding my grands with dignity, wisdom, and character.

With love,
