Not Gigi. Not Glamma. Just Grammy.

Not Gigi. Not Glamma. Just Grammy.

By: Aurora LaShay

In a world where names and titles are constantly evolving, why do I choose to be called “Grammy”?

This question often comes my way, especially as trendy alternatives become more popular. Yet, “Grammy” holds a special place in my heart rich with meaning, deeply rooted in principles, and bound to legacy.

The Meaning Behind “Grammy”

“Grammy” is more than a name. It is a reflection of respect, character, wisdom, and humility. Like the timeless titles “Mother,” “Father,” “Mama,” and “Daddy,” it carries the warmth of family and honors the unique role of a grandparent within that structure.

Proverbs 22:6 speaks to the importance of guidance: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” This reflects my commitment to instilling values of self-respect and honor for elders values that carry through generations.

Choosing Uniqueness Over Conformity

Choosing “Grammy” is a decision to stay grounded in conviction rather than cultural trends. In a world driven by the pressure to fit in, I find strength in standing firm in what has substance.

Romans 12:2 reminds us: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…” This verse reflects my belief in living by conviction. “Grammy” is not shaped by trends. It is shaped by truth, tradition, and intentional living.

A Note on Modern Trends

When I first became a grandmother, did I look like what many imagine a grandmother should look like? Did I dress like a stereotypical granny?

No. I didn't then, and I don't nearly eighteen years later.

Names like “Glamma” and “Gigi” are nice and modern, and I respect that every family has the freedom to choose what resonates with them. But I am drawn to what is grounded and timeless. “Grammy” reflects substance over style and identity over fashion. This is simply my personal perspective, not a rule for others.

There is no single way a Grammy is supposed to look. Some have gray hair; some do not. Some dress traditionally, while others embrace a modern style. What matters most is not appearance, but the love, guidance, and presence we bring to our families.

Setting a Benchmark & Directing Their Path

To the outside world, "Grammy" might sound outdated, but to me, it is timeless. When my grandchildren call me “Grammy,” they are honoring a standard that keeps them anchored. They are learning to acknowledge not just who I am to them, but the lineage that brought them here.

My role is to actively help direct their paths. I make it my purpose to encourage them, push them beyond the familiar, and expose them to endless possibilities and real-world opportunities.

That guidance extends deep into their spiritual growth. I don't just leave their faith to Sunday morning; I teach them the depth of the Bible unfolding real truths, context, and practical wisdom they don't always learn sitting in a church pew.

By establishing this title, I am doing more than teaching values. I am weaving love and purpose into their everyday lives. I want them to hear "Grammy" and feel the warmth of my arms around them, the sound of my laughter, and the quiet comfort of being truly seen, guided, and cherished.

Above all, I want that name to feel like home. I want them to know, without a shadow of a doubt, that in their Grammy, they will always find a safe harbor, an open door, a steady guide, and a love they can lean on forever.

One day, when they have families of their own, I want them to understand the value of choosing what reflects purpose in their own lives. “Grammy” becomes a symbol of the principles they can carry forward.

Anchoring in Tradition

This is a deliberate choice to honor the past while guiding the future. “Grammy” anchors us in values that do not shift with culture. When my grands call me “Grammy,” they are embracing a heritage of respect, integrity, and authenticity. It is a living reminder that some things are worth preserving.

Conclusion and Legacy

In everything I do, this is my truth: I do not care to be like everyone else.

“Grammy” gives me a space where I can reflect the WORD and not conform to a WORLD that often lacks the love embodied in the WORD.

By choosing “Grammy,” I honor divine love and pass that legacy forward guiding my grands with dignity, wisdom, and character.

With love,
