Life & Work with Aurora Threats

Voyage Houston Magazine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aurora Threats.

Hi Aurora, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Supercilious is an award-winning short film on the International Film Festival circuit.  The short is an adaptation of one of my poems with the same epithet.  Supercilious is a beautiful story about a young Belle who was sidelined by her friends.  Belle decided to set goals for herself.  She became a winner rising above expectations.  She emerged as a graceful and successful young lady despite the obstacles that she faced.

The ability to listen, follow and trust my instinct is how I have arrived at this moment. When I was about four or five years old I used to watch daytime soaps with my grandmother. I became drawn to, impressed by, and interested in acting and characters.  Respectively, it was watching soaps for entertainment that gave me light.  I wanted to use my imagination.  I kept my aspirations tucked away to protect them and in every opportunity that presented itself to me to perform, I was ready.

First thing first, with my sights on California I desired a professional degree. I knew to challenge myself to the confidence I needed to be successful in life. My path led me to Grambling State University where I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Speech & Theatre Ed.

I was ready to embark upon my dreams. Los Angeles, here I come! Within weeks I was auditioning for television, stage, and atmosphere. By the grace of God, I booked every time.

Eventually, I developed a passion for poetry and writing. My portfolio began to flourish and so did my creativity. I recall attending a seminar in Dallas where Spike Lee and Jasmine Guy were the guests. Spike Lee said, “you can make it in this industry from anywhere.” Guess what? Ultimately, you can if you grind, perfect your craft, and create the proper space around you.

It wasn’t until the pandemic that I could calibrate and utilize my creativity in a different way. I ran across one of my poems entitled “Supercilious” that I had written some time ago. I believe God gives understanding to the mind.  I took my poem and curated it into a beautiful 9-minute animated short film.  I knew it was a showpiece and it would do well on the Film Festival Circuit.  Certain it would cause some child to become encouraged.  I believe some will climb and exceed expectations.

What I didn’t realize was Supercilious would make world history in the process.  Supercilious trailblazed – it is noted as being the first animated short film collaboration between the United States and Ghana, AF.  When Eben Yelson (Creative Director – Fulton Film Ghana, LTD) shared this fact it was confirmation that Supercilious was within God’s perfect timing.  It exceeded all of our wildest expectations.  Making history as the first in America to earn this honor is a blessing from God.  Supercilious was in my heart, but it was His purpose that prevailed.

What got me to where I am is I kept my eyes forward and gazed straight before me.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This particular project has been a smooth journey because I had an awesome team.  A team that embraced and believed in Supercilious. There was great chemistry, energy, and excitement. We all shared the same philosophy … not to be discouraged by failure, but be encouraged by success.  We became a family and worked hard to produce a great product.  The music composition (scoring) was done by Tony Clark – Austin, TX.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
These last few months for me have been a whirlwind of blessings with our multi-winning short film Supercilious. Writing, creating, and producing a groundbreaking animated short film is epic. It’s what I am most proud of to date because it’s my vision, my aspiration, but God’s amazing grace. Filmmaking behind the scene is totally new for me, and I am loving it.

I am multi-hyphenated:  a writer, a producer, an actress, a blogger, a trailblazer, and animation is a newfound admiration. I’ve appeared in commercials, print, tv, videos, and more.  I toured the nation from coast to coast in hit stage-play productions performing to sold-out audiences nightly on every major stage in the continental United States. From the Hollywood Pantages (Hollywood, CA) to The Beacon (New York City) and of course, The Music Hall (Houston, TX) was one of those major markets.

I enjoy writing poetry.  I am the author of “Behind the Line” a slim book of inspirational poems.

What sets me apart from others is “I’m me, I set goals and I do what I do to inspire others.”

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Yes, the important lesson I learned in the midst of the Covid-19 Crisis is to anchor. I knew God sometimes put us in spaces to grow. I learned not to waste time thinking I have time.  I knew to believe in myself even if no one else does.  I learned without a doubt that successfully achieving something starts from the heart and one must work from the heart.  Give it your all.

Under any circumstance, no matter what it looks like, or what it feels like always trust God’s perfect timing.
