Closed Doors

This is an article that I wrote for "Southern Dallas Business & Living Magazine", August 2013.

Closed Doors

Don’t give up on your dreams because a few doors closed. Be grateful for every door that closed in your life. Thankful for every door that God closed and for every door that man slammed. Say thank you Lord and allow Him to show you the way.

Envision this…here it is Friday evening around 6:00 p.m. the temperature is 98 degrees. I’m driving down the freeway to my destination Dallas Galleria. Why did I get on 635 LBJ on a Friday evening?! Your presumption is as good as mine. There’s a construction zone over here, a lane closed over there and traffic is backed up. So, I do the next best thing turn on the radio, tune in to 94.5 KSoul to listen to some classic soul R&B to take my mind away from the unruly traffic. Oh, but the soft, sounds didn’t do it for me. So, I had a notion to just exit the freeway and take the streets. The scene was pleasantly different, with some winding turns, a few stop signs, but I arrived at my destination without being delayed any longer than necessary. Sometimes you have to take a different path to get where you’re going.

What amazes me is some believe there’s only one way to do everything, one way to achieve a goal, or one way to reach a dream and that’s simply not true.

What is true is what is meant to be will be. Every dream and every promise we have inside of us will be if we allow it to be. The key is you can’t allow every obstacle, every pain, every struggle, every worry, and everybody to get in your way. Instead, you have to learn to be persistent, to be resilient, to be ambitious, and to be yourself.

Lauryn Hill said it like this “Now, everything is everything that is meant to be, will be. After winter must come spring change it comes eventually. Sometimes it seems, we'll touch that dream. But, things come slowly or not at all. And, the ones on top won't make it stop so convinced that they might fall. Let's love ourselves, then we can't fail. To make a better situation tomorrow our seeds will grow, all we need is dedication”.

When a door closes we are quick to believe it’s over and there is simply no other way. It’s viewed as a negative. For that reason, so many give up and give in to defeat. This is why they don’t have the success they dream of.

If you take the time to clarify your purpose you will discover that when one door closes another opens. As you travel your path stay curious. Something might pique your interest and take you in a totally different direction. Understand with any new endeavor you must find a way to create the quality of energy you need to be inspired.

Do what you have to do to allow your blessings to flow through you to keep the momentum going because everything that can happen will happen. Then sometimes you have to just get out of your own way. Once you do open doors will reveal and opportunities present themselves.

Even in relationships, we can’t allow anyone to destroy our dreams, throw us off our game or cause us to lose hope in our future. When people get tired of doing or being who they are not to you they move on. Sometimes God will get them off your path and replace them with something

better. In the end, you’ll find it was best that they moved on than to realize later that someone you believed in keeping you from your dreams.

In no way, allow circumstances to interfere with your blessings. I understand disappointments can leave you feeling hopeless, but it’s when things become difficult that you have to amp it up and give it everything you have.

No matter what keep the right point of view and keep thanking God because you’ve read the word and found in (Revelation 3:7-8 NIV) … what he opens, no one can shut; and what he shuts, no one can open. When people close a door just let it be, keep the lid on and follow the directions God has laid out for you.

Know that everything is everything and when you give everything you have that’s all you can do. When you can see obstacles for what they are you can never lose hope. You can never lose faith in the path it takes to get you where you want to go.

The beautiful thing about life is it never stays the same. It’s abounding with surprises and anything can be a blessing, a miracle, or an opportunity if you choose to see it as such. A wise lady told me once, “the wind doesn’t always blow from the north and the east sometimes the wind will change its course and blow from the south and the west”.

At different times on our journey, the wind might change. In such a way, that when a door closes and another one swings open everything we’ve ever done and all we’re meant to do comes together in harmony with who we are and where we are destined to be.
